Swedish House Mafia vi raccontiamo la Reunion

I write this article almost with tears in my eyes, remembering the emotions of that night is something really powerful. I was there, among a huge crowd of dreamers waiting for one thing: the Reunion.

Since 2013, the year the Swedish House Mafia broke up, right there in Miami, each year there’s been someone spreading rumors about their return, about a reunion, which often turned out to be just a media stunt to generate clicks and hype among fans. But this year, the clues were too many. In our articles, we’ve often expressed our thoughts and the reasons that led us to believe that this year would be the right year

Ultra Music Festival announces a surprise Closing Slot for Sunday, March 25, 2018, and after a

rather disappointing closing set by Axwell & Ingrosso the previous Friday, the atmosphere started heating up… Everyone in Miami knew what was about to happen and was in a state of mixed anxiety and happiness: you could see it in taxis, feel it on the streets, sense it in clubs—there was only one topic of conversation. The Instagram account of the popular clothing brand Palm Angels posted some suspicious photos showing a giant mural with the words SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA in the Wynwood district of Miami, and stickers were everywhere, the hype was sky-high.

It’s the last DJ set of Sunday, March 25, David Guetta ends his set 20 minutes early with Sean Paul and Becky G performing live on stage to yet another radio hit, a sign of a continuously declining EDM era, but it’s Guetta himself who announces that something EPIC is about to happen. Guetta leaves the console, the main stage goes completely dark, and an enormous cloud of smoke starts to cover everything. The side LED walls display the words “No Photos” as the crew begins dismantling the console. (See our photo)

Several minutes pass, the crowd is in a reverent silence broken only by a few weak chants of “SWEDISH… HOUSE… MAFIA…“. The old console is gone, and a new, taller one is set up, almost as if to say: Everyone needs to be able to see what’s about to happen. More smoke, more waiting, anxiety, fear, joy—it’s been over half an hour. A large LED wall is mounted behind the console, and two rows of flamethrowers are installed. The hype is huge, really. We were almost in the middle of Bayfront Park, aware that there was an immense crowd behind us.

In the video above, you can see the endless wait that made us suffer a lot. It’s just before 11 PM, and by pure chance, we capture this shot that goes viral on social media.

Exactly at 11 PM, the huge strobe light row flashes, blinding the crowd, followed by a heavy bass drop. In seconds, that massive mirrored frame that had been above the main stage since day one, for no apparent reason, lowers down and covers the console, behind it, the most important musical event of the EDM era is happening.

The frame lifts, and the crowd erupts in cheers. Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso, and Steve Angello are together again, on that same stage where five years earlier they had ended their tour and announced their breakup—now, it’s the reunion. Miami 2 Ibiza kicks off, and shortly after, Axwell takes the mic and delivers the words that made the hearts of fans around the world tremble: My name is Axwell, this is Sebastian Ingrosso, and this is Steve Angello, and Miami, we know you love the SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA. The rest is history.

The three Swedes return to the helm, driving the crowd wild with what wasn’t a perfect DJ set but a simple musical mix of their biggest hits of all time, some mashups, and exclusive edits for the event. It was a memorable show, full of emotions, roars from the crowd, and singing at the top of our lungs with the little voice we had left. We Come, We Rave, We Love, fireworks, flames that burn the sweat off your skin, and all attention focused on that towering console.

We tried to capture the highlights of this unforgettable reunion in our video from under the stage. There’s nothing more to say but to relive it like this.

But what’s going to happen now? A few minutes after midnight, the Swedish House Mafia Instagram account is created, and within minutes it has over 300k followers. During the performance, Axwell says the phrase “Is Swedish House Mafia for life this time” and the questions multiply. The sharp-eyed notice two ID tracks in their set (we highlighted them in our video). There’s speculation about a worldwide tour and new #Releases by Swedish House Mafia, but what will they produce? Fans are ecstatic, expectations are sky-high, EDM has been revived, the reunion has happened!
