Apple confirms its commitment to keeping Radio alive, possibly in anticipation of the launch of the new CarPlay, which will integrate the primary functions of every car stereo and include FM frequencies within its system.
In any case, the Cupertino giant has recently launched three new thematic stations, all available for free through the Music app on Apple devices. They are Apple Música Uno, Apple Music Club, and Apple Music Chill, in addition to the already existing Apple Music 1, Apple Music Hits, and Apple Music Country.
”Apple Music Radio is the heartbeat of our service and represents the meeting point between exceptional human curation and cutting-edge technology that shapes and influences culture,” said Oliver Schusser, Vice President of Music, Sports, and Beats at Apple. “We’ve dedicated significant time and care to ensure these new radio stations are truly tailored, with curated selections and unique programming led by world-renowned music commentators that our audience will love.”
Since its launch in 2015, Apple Music Radio has offered exclusive programming curated by global experts and content not available elsewhere, including interviews with world-famous artists and shows hosted and created by musicians themselves. Here’s the difference, as we at EDM Lab see it, between a Radio and a simple Playlist, and Apple understands this well.
Apple Música Uno will revolve around the rich variety of styles found in Latin music worldwide. Apple Music Chill will serve as an escape, a refuge, a sonic oasis — a place to retreat to during the day. It’s a radio station dedicated to a state of mind, with continuous streams of chill tracks from all genres interspersed with reflective moments to remind listeners to take a few moments to find their calm and balance.
Meanwhile, Apple Music Club is for lovers of dance, electronic music, and club culture. Tim Sweeney and NAINA will guide listeners, providing context to mixes that span a full spectrum of sounds—from festival circuits to the underground scene. These mixes will also be available as DJ Mixes on Apple Music. Apple Music Club will feature talents like Honey Dijon, Jamie xx, FKA twigs, and Nia Archives, alongside sets curated by the Apple Music team in collaboration with Circoloco, Tomorrowland, The Warehouse Project, fabric, Hï Ibiza, Stone Island Sound, and more.
The Radio feature has a dedicated space within the Apple Music ecosystem. The Radio tab has been completely redesigned to make it even easier to discover interviews and shows hosted by prominent names in the music scene. Now, when opening the Music app, “Radio” is placed at the center of the menu, highlighting the importance of Radio itself.
Could this be a turning point? After all, thematic radio stations have always been well-loved by audiences and could serve as a valid alternative to Spotify’s sterile playlists.
