Is Big Room really dead? We leave you with this question before analyzing what has happened over the last five years in the “festival” EDM landscape, namely…
If during the 2010s the genre that went beyond melody was Big Room, what happened afterwards? Well, we documented it year after year here on EDM Lab through our weekly releases with Best of Today #Release. Genres such as tech house, slap house, and bass house became mainstream and the undisputed rulers of major festivals, and sometimes even clubs. On the other hand, Melodic House and Techno movements emerged. Nothing new — we know their origins — but together with afro house, these were the genres that over the last five years have given new life to EDM.
But in 2025 things changed slightly, with a strong return to melody and to a pure Progressive House sound. We also proved this in our Top 10, where this genre clearly dominates.
What if Big Room comes back too? We asked ourselves this question when the new collaboration between Matisse & Sadko and Vion Konger, “Pull Up”, landed in our hands. This track, already widely supported by artists such as Alesso and Martin Garrix, breaks powerfully into a sea full of “other” fish. But could this be a signal? It’s still too early to say, the year has just begun and musical trends seem to be nothing more than a continuation of what we saw being born, evolving, or returning in 2025.
In the meantime, this wild banger by Matisse & Sadko and Vion Konger definitely made us smile, and we also played it in episode #339 of Best of Today #Release. If you feel like taking a trip back in time, we refer you to one of our old columns dedicated entirely to this genre, #WhoNeedsBigRoom?, with the 2023 annual radio show.
