We head back to Belgium, a country already in the spotlight thanks to Tomorrowland, as the Belgian copyright management society <span class=\"s1\"><b>Sabam<\/b><\/span> has introduced a new licensing model based on the actual use of music, replacing the traditional estimation-based system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edm-lab.com\/extras\/musictech\/sabam-vollou-colleceting\/attachment\/sab\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-39265\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-39265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edm-lab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sab-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edm-lab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sab-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/www.edm-lab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/sab.png 730w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>To make this new model possible, Sabam has approved <span class=\"s1\"><b>Vollou<\/b><\/span> as one of the official providers of its <span class=\"s1\"><i>Music Recognition Technology<\/i><\/span> (MRT).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So, what exactly is Vollou? It is a software platform that automatically recognizes the music played inside a venue by using the existing sound system, without requiring any additional hardware. The system then generates a precise log of every track played, including playback time and song identification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For those less familiar with the music collecting industry, the difference is simple: venues now pay copyright royalties only for the music they actually play. As a result, artists, songwriters, and rights holders receive more accurate royalties based on the real usage of their works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, there&#8217;s another particularly interesting aspect. In many countries, DJs and clubs love to <strong>play brand-new music<\/strong> or even <strong>completely unreleased tracks<\/strong>. Since these tracks are not yet linked to a licensing database or collecting society repertoire, they are not included in the total number of licensed songs played during an event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Vollou already works with major collecting societies such as <span class=\"s1\"><b>PRS for Music<\/b><\/span> in the United Kingdom and <span class=\"s1\"><b>BumaStemra<\/b><\/span> in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Overall, this is an important step forward for the music collecting industry.
