Guatemalan DJ and producer Diamanté Anthony Blackmon, known more popularly as Carnage – GORDO, is on a mission to help communities like the one he grew up in by building schools and recently announced the construction of a second using his own funds.
The school opens with the commitment to help children and young people overcome disadvantages and create promising opportunities for tomorrow. The new school, Edificio Taraka, will be located in Nuevo Eden, a town in the San Marcos region of Guatemala.
Gordo‘s understanding of the importance of education comes directly from his personal experience: his “second mother,” driving private and public school students around Guatemala City. This, and his own upbringing in Guatemala, revealed the inequalities between those born into relative privilege and those born into extreme poverty. Even before her family moved to the United States in hopes of finding a better life.
It is for this reason that education is so highly valued by those who know what it is like not to have one. Playing regularly in many of the world’s most prestigious venues – from London to Ibiza to Tulum to Miami to San Francisco to New York in the last 12 months alone – Gordo Guatemala School is an example of social responsibility.
