March is the month that opens the “Festival Season” as it has for many years now… Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland Winter, EDC Mexico, Coachella are only the most important electronic music festivals taking place all over the world. But this 2020 really does taste different:
The CoronaVirus epidemic, which has already infected several thousand people around the world, is worrying, so we take cover. It is not up to us to say whether these precautions are right or wrong, but the world of nightlife and big festivals is going through a really dark period.
This week, with an official release, first Tomorrowland Winter, then Ultra Music Festival (Miami) cancel the dates of the festivals postponing them to next 2021, it’s a sad moment.
So, for the first time in the history, Ultra Music Festival, in force since 1999 will not be staged in the main edition, that of Miami, which this year would also mark the expected return to BayFront Park.
What are the implications from a musical point of view? Ultra Music Festival in particular, it’s always been the festival of new music, ID, experimentation, exclusive performances (see Qube 3.0 of deadmau5 last 2019), many DJs are waiting for this festival to play unreleased tracks and as many fans like us are there ready to discover new music. Ultra and Tomorrowland are huge events that year after year welcome people from every corner of the planet. What will happen now?
The festival season has just started. Next April 10th Coachella should open its doors for two weekends. After that, there will be Electric Love, Tomorrowland Belgium, Barcelona Beach Festival, Ultra Europe and other major events that risk closure if this epidemic continues.
All we have to do is wait. We at EDM Lab will keep you up to date with developments in the various editions of major festivals around the world, in the hope that this ugly chapter in history can be closed as soon as possible. On the cover of our article, our personal photo, taken at the end of Ultra2019, in which, as usual, the staff announces the dates of the next event, which unfortunately will not take place this year.
